We have all heard that antioxidants can help fight the ravages of aging. Antioxidants counteract disease causing free radicals and antioxidants help to repair damaged cells. They are so beneficial is so many ways that it is almost unbelievable that they can also help to counteract tooth decay. I said, ALMOST unbelievable, but if you look at everything else they can do, it really IS possible, isn’t it?
Recently a group of researchers in Australia noticed that when two of the antioxidants in cranberries were tested against a bacterium that is responsible for tooth decay the bacterium just didn’t act normally. The antioxidants that were tested are Quercetin and Myricetin. The bacterium that they were tested against is one of the LEADING causes of tooth decay, Streptococcus mutans.
Now we need to understand that those researchers didn’t actually have people chew up a bunch of cranberries for the scientific evaluation so there is no way of knowing just how many cranberries we would have to eat in order to prevent tooth decay. HOWEVER, we DO know that antioxidant supplements provide more antioxidants than we could possibly get if we had to rely on eating to get those little critters. Sometimes the amount of antioxidants is equivalent to eating pounds and pounds of food.
All in all, this is just ONE MORE reason to take a good antioxidant supplement every day. Think about it! We stay healthier, our skin is smoother, suppler and younger looking. And NOW we can smile confidently because those mighty antioxidants help to prevent tooth decay. Amazing, isn’t it?
